WMV files not playing in WMP11
WMV-files doesn't play in the embedded WMP-player. The play-button is "greyed out" and nothing happens when I click it. I've tried it both at home and at work. MPEG not playing in WMP10
Initially, when I clicked a *.wmv file to play with WMP-10, the video portion would freeze on the first frame and the audio would play through. I've tried upgrading to WMP-11, to no avail. Currently running Win XP Pro on AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 with 64MB VRAM.

The registry entries listed for WMV files seem reasonable without checking in detail, so it might be one route to try - though always back up your registry using regedit before taking any I've tried setting WMP11 as default player for these files types, but it still won't open WMP11 and play the file.

I am not sure this all applies to me. The only thing I want is play .wmv files on my laptop. Since two months I have only black screens in WMP. I don't know what happened two months ago that caused this. An upgrade this week from WMP10 to WMP11 did not solve it.

And MP3 files have much more compatibility than WMV. Every device, pre-Zune, device that I know of that will play WMV will play MP3 as well. Not every MP3 device will play WMV. While we all know it just can not happen, some people are getting permissions error messages with WMP 11 and WMA files.
